Scissor Lift vs Boom Lift: Which Manlift Is Right for Your Saudi Arabia Project
Scissor lift or boom lift? Compare reach, mobility, cost and ideal use cases to pick the right manlift for construction and industrial projects in Saudi Arabia.
Scissor lifts and boom lifts are both manlifts, but they solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one wastes money and slows your project. This guide explains the practical differences so you can match the machine to the job.
What Is a Scissor Lift
A scissor lift uses a criss-cross steel mechanism to raise a wide, flat platform straight up. It moves only vertically, no horizontal reach. The platform is large enough for 2–4 workers plus tools and materials. Working heights range from 8 to 20 metres.
Best for: indoor fit-outs, warehouse racking installation, ceiling work (HVAC, electrical, fire suppression), painting, and any task where the base of the machine can sit directly below the work area.
What Is a Boom Lift
A boom lift (also called a cherry picker or aerial work platform) uses a hydraulic arm to lift a small basket up, out and over obstacles. There are two types:
- Articulating boom: multiple hinged arm sections that bend around obstacles. Ideal for reaching over pipe racks, parapets and structural steel.
- Telescopic boom: a single extending arm for maximum height and outreach. Best when you need to reach far and high in a straight line.
Working heights range from 12 to 56 metres with horizontal outreach of up to 25 metres.
Scissor Lift vs Boom Lift: Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Scissor Lift | Boom Lift |
|---|---|---|
| Working height | 8–20 m | 12–56 m |
| Horizontal outreach | None (vertical only) | Up to 25 m |
| Platform capacity | 2–4 workers + materials | 1–2 workers |
| Daily rental cost | SAR 200–650 | SAR 500–1,800 |
| Setup time | 2–5 minutes | 5–15 minutes |
| Indoor use | Excellent (electric) | Limited (size, emissions) |
| Rough terrain | Diesel models only | Most models (4WD) |
| Obstacle clearance | Cannot reach over | Can reach over and around |
When to Choose a Scissor Lift
- Your work is directly above the machine: ceiling installations, lighting, sprinkler systems, cable trays.
- You need platform space: carrying tools, materials, welding equipment or panels alongside workers.
- The job is indoors: electric scissor lifts produce zero emissions, fit through standard doorways and roll on non-marking tyres.
- Budget matters: scissor lifts cost 40–60% less than equivalent-height boom lifts.
- Heights under 20 m are sufficient: no boom lift needed if the task is within scissor lift range and directly accessible.
When to Choose a Boom Lift
- You must reach over or around obstacles: pipe racks, structural steel, parapets, building facades.
- Height exceeds 20 m: only boom lifts serve heights above the scissor lift range.
- The base cannot sit directly below the work point: trenches, water features, uneven ground or restricted zones below.
- You are working outdoors on rough terrain: diesel boom lifts with 4WD and foam-filled tyres handle sand, gravel and unpaved sites.
- Aramco or SABIC site work: plant maintenance, pipe welding, tank inspection and turnaround tasks almost always require boom lifts for their reach flexibility. See Aramco safety requirements for manlifts.
Can You Use Both on the Same Project
Yes, and many projects do. A typical industrial construction site in Jubail or Dammam might use scissor lifts inside the control building for electrical and HVAC installation, while boom lifts work outside on the pipe rack and structural steel. Renting a mixed fleet from a single supplier like MAKCON simplifies logistics, documentation and invoicing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a scissor lift safer than a boom lift
Scissor lifts have a wider, more stable platform, which makes them feel more secure. However, both types are equally safe when operated correctly with fall protection. Boom lifts are more exposed to wind at height, most manufacturers limit boom lift operation above 12 m/s wind speed. Both require a full-body harness, twin lanyard and anchorage to the platform anchor point.
Can a scissor lift work on rough terrain
Standard electric scissor lifts are indoor/flat-surface only. Diesel rough-terrain (RT) scissor lifts have 4WD, higher ground clearance and foam-filled tyres that handle gravel, sand and unfinished surfaces typical on Saudi construction sites.
Which is faster to set up on site
Scissor lifts are ready in 2–5 minutes, drive into position, extend outriggers (if fitted) and raise. Boom lifts take 5–15 minutes due to outrigger setup, boom pre-checks and greater travel distance. For repetitive short tasks across many locations, scissor lifts are more productive.
Do I need the same licence for both
In Saudi Arabia, both require MEWP operator training and a valid operator card. On Aramco and SABIC sites, the operator must hold a specific Aramco Work Permit for the MEWP/manlift category. The training covers both types, a single certification qualifies an operator for scissor lifts and boom lifts.
